"The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" Movie Review: A Relatable, Timely Movie

People say that a new year brings new challenges and new opportunities in life. If you are planning to have a career move, or bring a new leaf or lift a new chapter to your life's pages, then you have to watch first 20th Century Fox's opening salvo movie for 2014. "The Secret Life of Water Mitty" is THE inspirational movie to watch for this January.

Walter Mitty (played by Ben Stiller) has a very ordinary life. He has gone to no places at all, basically, he has a boring life. And may I add to that, Walter Mitty has no love life and a frequently zoned-out guy. He always zoned-out or temporarily goes out of reality and daydreams. He daydreams of saving a dog in a building that is about to explode, an adventure to a mountain with the girl of his dreams, among others.

"Don't Cry Mommy" Movie Review

South Korea's most controversial movie of 2012 recently paved its way to Philippine cinemas via the new independent local distributor of foreign movies, Axinite Digicinema, Inc. The local distributor's initial movie offering was quite an eye opener to the social status of Korea, or perhaps even in the Philippines. The movie's strong attempt to tackle a controversial plot which involves delinquent acts of teenagers (in this movie, it was teenage rape), is so surreal but a little believable. It is said at the beginning of the movie that the writer and the director motivated to do the movie because of several accounts of teenage rape cases in South Korea which were not really resolved due to either lack of evidence or the accuse is a minor and cannot be jailed because of lack of juvenile delinquency laws.

"Metro Manila" Movie Review: An Art Imitates Life Masterpiece

"Metro Manila" movie is the product of hardwork, imagination, and love in filmmaking by the award-winning director Sean Ellis. In this film, he visualized and captured a powerful and compelling drama in its simplest yet most eye opener presentation. Director Sean Ellis not only captured the grotesque state of the lives in Metro Manila and the struggles some people encounter in the metropolis, but he also captured the heart of story hidden among the busy streets, colorful night lights, and crazy living in the metro. What is more spectacular is that, all of these things happened in the film "Metro Manila" were visualized and captured through eyes of a foreign filmmaker.

The movie "Metro Manila" is not a Philippine production independent film. However, its cast includes an array of equally good in their craft Filipino artists both from mainstream and independent Philippine cinemas. The movie instantly became a powerful socio-political eye opener movie - that not all things bright and beautiful you see in the metro are good; that not all the glitz and glamour of the city are in their true form; and that different people wear different masks whenever they need or want to.

"World War Z" Movie Review

In an attempt to have a zombie-apocalyptic horror genre movie or series such as that of the popular TV show, The Walking Dead from AMC and movies such as Zombieland, Resident Evil, I am Legend, or Warm Bodies, the Brad Pitt starrer movie, World War Z delivered a much more tamed but has less laid-back plot that just-a-few-more-movies-and-you-know-this-will-be-a-new-trend-in-Hollywood kind of thing. I think, Brad Pitt's character Gerry Lane character is a little weak for a muscular buff such as Brad Pitt himself. Well, you can't blame Gerry Lane for having a gullible-like character because he was somehow blackmailed to do his task in exchange for the safety of his family.

"Cloud Atlas" Movie Review

When it comes to timeline plot, the first thing that pops up to my mind is the movie "The Hours" starring three of the most respective actresses in Hollywood today, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman. If you have watched the "The Hours" movie, Nicole Kidman played the author Virginia Woolfe, Julianne Moore played a woman who wants to be free in the 1960's who is reading Virginia Woolfe's novels, while Meryl Streep played a lady in her prime years who is living in the present world. The twist in the story tells us that Julianne Moore happens to be Meryl Streep's mother (or some relative but I'm sure it was her mother!). So, I think you got the connection.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter Movie Review — Seriously Exciting to Watch!

I am neither a fan of American history nor of vampire movies, but when the two ideas where combined together in one awesome epic movie, I think the idea is something that no one can simply just ignore. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter the President by Day and Vampire Hunter at Night , is an alternate story of what could have happened to the life of one of America's greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln before he became the president that everyone idolized. Thanks to the wild imagination of fusion fiction writer and author, Seth Grahame-Smith. The title might give you a laugh, or maybe a smirk, or whatever, but this movie is seriously one of the serious and decent vampire movies there is.

"This Means War" Movie Review: A Spy Movie Like No Other!

I am always a fan of spy movies and spy-related series on television. Who can forget the likes of Jennifer Garner in her hit TV series "Alias", or perhaps, Tom Cruise in his action-packed movie, "Mission Impossible" movie installments, or the hit-comedy "Austin Powers" series starring Mike Myers which is a spin-off of yet another spy movie, James Bond, 007 series franchise, or the 2010 hit spy movie "Salt" starring the gorgeous, Angelina Jolie? Indeed, spy movies are always a hit in Hollywood. Once in a while it becomes a trend, and then it comes and it goes. However, when it comes back, spy movies becomes a legend, indeed!

"Babel" Movie Review

About a couple of months ago, I had a chance to watch the movie "Babel" with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchet as their main attraction to the film. I know this review was far overdue, but since it's now a new year for all of us, I'd still wanted to write this review, anyway.

"Babel" is a movie composed of four ill-twisted, intertwining fate stories. The first one is the story of two brothers caught up in a situation they can never escape, the second story revolves around a couple stranded in the middle of a life and death situation, the third story is about a nanny, the children she is taking care of and their misadventure across the Mexican border and finally, the fourth story is about a disturbed Japanese deaf girl who lacks love and attention. Their stories are bonded by a rifle.

"Still Life" by Katski Flores Movie Review!

Last Wednesday night, my friends and I have decided to pursue watching "Still Life" by Katski Flores (the indie filmmaker that my colleague was, as I said in my previous entry, once a classmate of hers in high school, hehehe, that I heard so much praises about), despite the severe asthma that my colleague friends have given me by climbing up the carpeted stairs up to the fourth floor of CCP which triggered my long-gone or dormant bronchitis (I got a slight cough that was triggered into an asthma). Well, as a responsible blogger (bwehehehe), I was obliged to write a review regarding this movie matter. Too bad, this was the only film that I watched, I have no time to watch for the other films because I was pre-occupied with work lately! Huhuhu... (Sorry, I don't have any poster of it so I put the ticket instead, hehehe!)

Anyway, it was not only me and my friends who were present to the film showing. My co-blogger slash online buddy slash new found rich friend Jerico was also there in the event, watching the film for the second time (it's a good thing he did not reveal the twist of the story until I asked him just to confirm the twist of the story on the last 45 minutes of the film, I am so good at guessing the twist of a movie, damn!). The famous Rajo Laurel was also there, he was seated at the front row, on the couch, yes, on the couch, how comfy (we were seating on a deflated-foam chair that was a pain in the @$$) and the theater actor Gary Lim was also invited by Cinemalaya to watch the film. Now, the review!

I'll be giving some criteria in making my review. First, I am going to present my own summary of the film and the value/s presented. Secondly, the technical aspects. And lastly, my "what can I say about the script of the film" review for I am frustrated screenwriter. Silly me. Warning: I am not so good on criticizing, because I am not a critic!
Summary and Values
Set in a urban area where James, a struggling painter has a rare disease called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system, tries to find himself in the midst of battling his rare disease. He paints different "still life" paintings on canvass (thus the title) and hopes to find his subject for his very last painting. Meanwhile, Emma, a rural girl, is also finding herself between her responsibility as a young mother and her true-being as an individual. Their lives crossed path when both of them find each other in an isolated house in the province where mangroves grow and pristine blue waters flow (I suspect it was Guimaras!).

The movie (and I think all of the movies in the competition) is all about making choices, and choosing the right path to go. James was about to commit suicide in the isolated house until Emma came. Emma, on the other hand already chosen the right path for not doing an abortion for her unborn child but was now confused if she will go back for her son to where she left him (I think), to her doctor friend that she met.

Technical Aspects
The lighting is good, maybe the crew uses some light filters, because it gave the whole movie a smooth reel-like texture, something that does not look like shot on a digital film. I think the camera also did a great job. If I am not mistaken, the writer, producer, director, Katski Flores herself used an HD digital camera that gave its movie-like texture to the digital film. If you're a fan of watching indies, I think you know what I mean. I personally like the soundtrack at the end of the movie and the guitar and piano instrumentals during the whole film. The catchy tunes suited the genré and the motif of the film. I also like the time when James sees the beauty of a live canvass, but of course he cannot believe himself seeing this because of his stubbornness and out-of-focus mind! Hehehe. Hmm... if you are a great observer and a critic to the lighting of the film, you will have a hint on what will be the twist of the story, which I already had in mind but I did not reveal it yet to my colleagues to keep myself from spoiling them. Men, I am so good at this! Bwehehehe! And also the camera shots and cinematography was great!

The Script
Now, the script! Katski Flores sure knows when to give her viewers some appeal to the movie. She uses the right formula for every scenes — the throwing of lines between the two main characters in the isolated house, the very insightful Paulo Coelho-like words of wisdom, the almost nonlinear plot of the story, in short everything is perfect — except for the fact that I already guessed the twist of the story before it was finally revealed at the last 30 minutes of the story (remember I guessed the twist on the last 45 minutes, that's 15 minutes before the revelation! Hahaha!). The script was good and well written. Two thumbs up for Katski!

Overall, "Still Life" by Katski Flores is worth watching or worth checking out! A good movie for me is the one that I cannot guess what will be the twist of the story. There are a few of them, and I'm glad that those movies were really good! Too bad for Katski because I guessed the twist right. But despite the early revelation of the twist, I am still giving my four stars to this movie! Keep up the good work Katski (first name basis, as if we're close! Hahaha)! d (^_^) b
