Jake Gyllenhaal plays a changed man in "Love & Other Drugs"

Taking control when the ultimate men’s drug Viagra was finally introduced to the public in the 90s, Jake Gyllenhaal suits up as one hot pharmaceutical rep, named Jamie, whose charm with women is as high as his monthly sales quota in the film “Love & Other Drugs”.

Starring opposite Anne Hathaway as Maggie in “Love & Other Drugs,” Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jamie Randall whose account is based on the nonfiction book by Jamie Reidy who chronicles his experiences as a Viagra salesman for pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The film’s co-scribe and producer Charles Randolph who first got hold of the book finds it very intriguing, “Jamie wrote about experiences I thought were analogous to films like Jerry Maguire, Wall Street or any movie where a young man goes into the workplace with ideas of what the world is going to be and the world beats them out of him,” recalls Randolph.

Director Zwick says the roles of Jamie and Maggie represent significant steps for the two actors. “[As Jamie] Jake’s not just romantic, interesting and charming, he’s enormously funny. Jake’s sense of humor is nothing new to those who’ve known him socially, but up to now we’ve never quite had the opportunity to see that on film. He has a great leading man quality and is extraordinarily at ease, and that comes of maturity and experience. Jake’s work in this film allows us to witness a younger actor become a leading man, and that’s very exciting for a filmmaker and, I think, an audience.

Gyllenhaal’s Jamie is the black sheep in a successful family. He’s the ultimate seducer, and would have been perfectly happy to float through life minus the burden of responsibility or connecting to anyone... until he meets Maggie. “He’s bright but a bit self-destructive,” says the actor. “He’s content to be successful with his life as a salesman of a revolutionary drug – a job for which he’s perfectly suited – and continue to succeed at fake connections. He’s an expert at those because he’s a great performer."

The movie is set in the late 90s, a moment, says Zwick, “when the fabric of American life changed forever” because for the first time, drugs became commercialized. At the top of the sales and advertising charts was a little blue pill called Viagra, a new treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra’s blockbuster sales trigger Jamie’s ascension to the top of the heap as a Big Pharma sales rep. Then, because of Jake’s relationship with Maggie, he goes deeper into the world of medicine and drugs and the different strands of the story knit together and, I hope, resonate off each other.”

Jake Gyllenhaal's outstanding and believable performance in “Love & Other Drugs” earned him a Golden Globe nomination but failed to grab the trophy to Paul Giamatti. He was remembered in his performance in "Brokeback Mountain" and the recently shown adventure-movie "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time". “Love & Other Drugs” is now showing in the Philippines.

Anne Hathaway plays a sick girl in "Love & Other Drugs"

Love & Other Drugs” showcases anew Anne Hathaway’s unconventional choices as she takes on the role of Maggie Murdock, a young artist afflicted with Parkinson’s disease that prevents her into entering life-changing decisions especially when it comes to relationships. Anne’s extraordinary risks in her career continue in Love & Other Drugs” where she takes another brave choice and pushes her boundaries in a story of love’s powerful nature between a couple who tries to resist but eventually surrenders.

The movie tells of two people, both free-spirited who started out having casual sex which then evolved into something much more complex. Maggie’s disease makes it difficult for her to continue her work, slowly impairing her speech and motor skills. Jake Gyllenhall on the other hand, plays the role of Jamie Randall who is an ultimate seducer working at the giant pharmaceutical Pfizer. The two initially agrees to a no-strings-attached arrangement, just sex whenever and wherever each of them needs it. But as their casual relationship turns into weeks, both feels an uneasy change when Jamie unexpectedly mans up and starts taking responsibility for Maggie. Maggie, on the other hand is slowly opening up to the possibility of depending on to somebody to entrust her life.

When Maggie meets Jamie, she is at a transitional moment in her life,” says Hathaway. “She hasn’t accepted her challenges, and more importantly, she hasn’t been able to accept herself.

Hathaway and the filmmakers made sure that Maggie’s condition shapes the character’s attitude and was always in the service of the character. “I loved how seemingly fearless Maggie is,” says Hathaway. “I was moved by the challenges she faces and by the façade she presents to the world, as an idealized sex goddess who is fine with everything and anything. But there’s an aching and yearning there; she’s scared and vulnerable, and a wonderful person under all of that. As an actress, you dream of opportunities to explore those things.

She received advice from another real warrior in the drug wars, Lucy Roucis, a professional actor with Parkinson’s disease (diagnosed when she was in her late twenties) who now works in Denver with an acting troupe called PHAMALY (the Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League, Inc.). In the film, Roucis also plays a part as a person afflicted with Parkinson’s whose shtick at a convention for Parkinson’s patients helps Maggie begin to come to terms with her condition.

Anne Hathaway was best known as the heiress of the princess' crown in "The Princess Diaries" franchise, "The Devil Wears Prada" with Academy Award winner, Meryl Streep, and the hit fantasy movie "Ella Enchanted". Anne Hathaway's performance in “Love & Other Drugs” earned her a Golden Globe nomination but failed to grab the trophy to another great actress, Natalie Portman. “Love & Other Drugs” is now showing in Philippine theaters, nationwide!

A Tale of the Left-Over Raisins!

According to Looney Tunes, raisins are dried up bowling balls. I believe. True story.

Well... if you are wondering why is there a "tell a tale" here in my awesome blog, I figure out, it is not hurtful for me or for my awesome blog to go beyond the usual. I thought, "hey, this is my blog, so I can write anything from it". So here it is... the finish product of my self-deliberation, and hundreds, no, maybe thousands of arguments with myself to include at least once in a while, some tell-all experience from my awesome life. Because I am awesome enough to include a tell-all experience, I might enjoy putting some, maybe, many here. Hahaha... but wait, this is just the beginning. I am thinking of putting another item here... and that's coming soon!
