Taking control when the ultimate men’s drug Viagra was finally introduced to the public in the 90s, Jake Gyllenhaal suits up as one hot pharmaceutical rep, named Jamie, whose charm with women is as high as his monthly sales quota in the film “Love & Other Drugs”.
Starring opposite Anne Hathaway as Maggie in “Love & Other Drugs,” Jake Gyllenhaal plays Jamie Randall whose account is based on the nonfiction book by Jamie Reidy who chronicles his experiences as a Viagra salesman for pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The film’s co-scribe and producer Charles Randolph who first got hold of the book finds it very intriguing, “Jamie wrote about experiences I thought were analogous to films like Jerry Maguire, Wall Street or any movie where a young man goes into the workplace with ideas of what the world is going to be and the world beats them out of him,” recalls Randolph.
Director Zwick says the roles of Jamie and Maggie represent significant steps for the two actors. “[As Jamie] Jake’s not just romantic, interesting and charming, he’s enormously funny. Jake’s sense of humor is nothing new to those who’ve known him socially, but up to now we’ve never quite had the opportunity to see that on film. He has a great leading man quality and is extraordinarily at ease, and that comes of maturity and experience. Jake’s work in this film allows us to witness a younger actor become a leading man, and that’s very exciting for a filmmaker and, I think, an audience.”
Gyllenhaal’s Jamie is the black sheep in a successful family. He’s the ultimate seducer, and would have been perfectly happy to float through life minus the burden of responsibility or connecting to anyone... until he meets Maggie. “He’s bright but a bit self-destructive,” says the actor. “He’s content to be successful with his life as a salesman of a revolutionary drug – a job for which he’s perfectly suited – and continue to succeed at fake connections. He’s an expert at those because he’s a great performer."
The movie is set in the late 90s, a moment, says Zwick, “when the fabric of American life changed forever” because for the first time, drugs became commercialized. At the top of the sales and advertising charts was a little blue pill called Viagra, a new treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra’s blockbuster sales trigger Jamie’s ascension to the top of the heap as a Big Pharma sales rep. Then, because of Jake’s relationship with Maggie, he goes deeper into the world of medicine and drugs and the different strands of the story knit together and, I hope, resonate off each other.”
Jake Gyllenhaal's outstanding and believable performance in “Love & Other Drugs” earned him a Golden Globe nomination but failed to grab the trophy to Paul Giamatti. He was remembered in his performance in "Brokeback Mountain" and the recently shown adventure-movie "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time". “Love & Other Drugs” is now showing in the Philippines.

“Love & Other Drugs” showcases anew Anne Hathaway’s unconventional choices as she takes on the role of Maggie Murdock, a young artist afflicted with Parkinson’s disease that prevents her into entering life-changing decisions especially when it comes to relationships. Anne’s extraordinary risks in her career continue in Love & Other Drugs” where she takes another brave choice and pushes her boundaries in a story of love’s powerful nature between a couple who tries to resist but eventually surrenders.
The movie tells of two people, both free-spirited who started out having casual sex which then evolved into something much more complex. Maggie’s disease makes it difficult for her to continue her work, slowly impairing her speech and motor skills. Jake Gyllenhall on the other hand, plays the role of Jamie Randall who is an ultimate seducer working at the giant pharmaceutical Pfizer. The two initially agrees to a no-strings-attached arrangement, just sex whenever and wherever each of them needs it. But as their casual relationship turns into weeks, both feels an uneasy change when Jamie unexpectedly mans up and starts taking responsibility for Maggie. Maggie, on the other hand is slowly opening up to the possibility of depending on to somebody to entrust her life.
“When Maggie meets Jamie, she is at a transitional moment in her life,” says Hathaway. “She hasn’t accepted her challenges, and more importantly, she hasn’t been able to accept herself.”
Hathaway and the filmmakers made sure that Maggie’s condition shapes the character’s attitude and was always in the service of the character. “I loved how seemingly fearless Maggie is,” says Hathaway. “I was moved by the challenges she faces and by the façade she presents to the world, as an idealized sex goddess who is fine with everything and anything. But there’s an aching and yearning there; she’s scared and vulnerable, and a wonderful person under all of that. As an actress, you dream of opportunities to explore those things.”
She received advice from another real warrior in the drug wars, Lucy Roucis, a professional actor with Parkinson’s disease (diagnosed when she was in her late twenties) who now works in Denver with an acting troupe called PHAMALY (the Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League, Inc.). In the film, Roucis also plays a part as a person afflicted with Parkinson’s whose shtick at a convention for Parkinson’s patients helps Maggie begin to come to terms with her condition.
Anne Hathaway was best known as the heiress of the princess' crown in "The Princess Diaries" franchise, "The Devil Wears Prada" with Academy Award winner, Meryl Streep, and the hit fantasy movie "Ella Enchanted". Anne Hathaway's performance in “Love & Other Drugs” earned her a Golden Globe nomination but failed to grab the trophy to another great actress, Natalie Portman. “Love & Other Drugs” is now showing in Philippine theaters, nationwide!

United Kingdom's (UK) hardest working singer for the year 2010 has been named and it was none other than the 1990's rap icon, Peter Andre.
Andre was chosen for the recognition for performing live to more fans last year than any other UK-based entertainer. He sang to almost 100,000 fans during a whooping 38 arena concerts on his "Revelation" tour in 2010, beating the 2009 winner Status Quo in terms of audience attendance. It was revealed that rockers Status Quo took the second place spot in the list compiled and provided by the Performing Rights Society of UK (PRS).
Completing the top five of UK's 2010 hardest working singer/s and/or performer/s are JLS, which came in third, Westlife being at the 4th place, and Rod Stewart in a proud 5th place spot.

In a recent news as reported by Business Mirror, last Christmas season's text messaging traffic declined to a significant number, making the popular social networking website, facebook, a better alternative in greeting friends, family members, and loved ones.
In a data provided by Globe Telecoms, the country’s second-largest wireless telecommunications provider with about 26 million subscribers, showed that SMS traffic declined year-on-year by 6% on December 24; 12% on December 25; and 9% on December 31 and January 1. On the other hand, the largest wireless network provider, Smart Telecommunications' spokesperson, Mon Isberto said that Smart's SMS traffic for Christmas and New Year is up over last year, but the growth is not as strong as prior years. He also pointed out that social media through our mobile network has definitely increased, significantly.
In comparison, a 20-peso load that will be used to rent a unit in an Internet cafe can reach a lot of people and would only cost a user a short period of time to greet everyone in his/her friends list, while a 20-peso load for unlitext service can be time consuming. Unlike in a mobile phone service providers where getting cellular signals are sometime difficult, using an Internet and social networking websites such as facebook could reach far away places with just a click of the mouse. The bottomline is, social networking websites reach far away places and is free as compared to the limited access of what mobile phone providers are giving.

Jack Black steps in on Jonathan Swift’s fantastical story of the seafaring adventurer Gulliver in “Gulliver’s Travels.” The story takes Gullivers to the elusive Bermuda spot who discovers the land of Lilliput where the inhabitants are tiny. The book was since heralded as a brilliant satire on human behaviour when it was first published in 1726. Since then, the story of Gulliver’s Travels has captured the public’s imagination for almost three hundred years.
The story unfolds...
In the latest spin of today’s movie wonders, Jack Black who stars and serves as executive producer in “Gulliver’s Travels” brings the story with humongous fun laden with superb 3D visual effects. From his cornered mailroom office, Lemuel Gulliver (Black) walks the halls and tables of the most celebrated journalists in a leading Manhattan newspaper. Gulliver’s untamed imagination then takes him unexpectedly to an assignment from his longtime office crush Darcy, the newspaper’s travel editor. After convincing Darcy of his impeccable travel writing, he is eventually assigned to cover the mystical Bermuda area where after violent waves, washed him ashore to an island called Lilliput where thumb-sized citizens live.
Gulliver then meets a lineage of royalties in the island from its king down to its most noble subject. After a rough start with the Lilliputians that sees Gulliver tied up and wheeled through the Town Square, then outfitted with a pulley system through which the Lilluput leaders control his every move, Gulliver begins to win over his captors. Gulliver even helps a commoner (Jason Segel) woo a princess (Emily Blunt) – employing, as Gulliver calls it, some “grade-A court-age” – and singlehandedly defeats an armada of the Lilliputians’ arch-nemeses, the Blefuscians.
Making the effects
One of Gulliver’s biggest shock comes with the appearance of a robot designed and built by Lilliput’s ever-scheming General Edward to once and for all eliminate Gulliver. Inspired by a magazine article found on Gulliver’s wrecked ship, Edward devises an intricate assembly of gears and pulleys that “drive” the robot’s motion.
Noted visual effects house hy*drau”lx (“2012”) worked closely with Rob Letterman on the CG ‘bot design and execution. Also making critical contributions to the world of Lilliput was premier visual effects house WETA Digital, which won Oscars for its groundbreaking work on “Avatar,” “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “King Kong”. Here, too, the robot design married the modern with the less-so. “Part of the original concept of the robot was to have its contemporary design accompany a Victorian-era technology,” says hy*drau”lx’s Erik Liles. “This gave rise to the more mechanical aspects of the robot’s locomotion – its gears and pulleys system.”
The visual effects wizards at hy*drau”lx didn’t make things easy for themselves. The robot begins life as a miniature, trashcan-shaped device that transforms to the gargantuan, exaggerated and cartoonish heap that battles Gulliver. Since the filmmakers continued to sort through these challenges and put the final CG touches on their creation well into the post-production process, during production Jack Black found himself battling a junior-sized version – a robot suit worn by a stuntman. This allowed Black to interact with the robot during filming, helping both the actor and visual effects team map out the no-holds-barred contest we see onscreen.
Hands-on producer
The entire cast – robot included – appreciated not only the talents of Jack Black, the Actor, but the work ethic and dedication to the project from Jack Black, the Executive Producer. The latter was a stern taskmaster for actor Black during some of the film’s action set pieces. For a scene where Gulliver singlehandedly battles the Blefuscian armada, high-speed cameras captured Black, who stripped to the waist and jiggled his bare torso to simulate the effects of hundreds of miniature cannonballs slamming into Gulliver’s stomach, making waves in his flesh.
Even when things were relatively calm in Lilliput, and Black wasn’t before the cameras, he was on set everyday to feed his lines to his cast mates who were acting to Gulliver’s eye line. With over half the film set against enormous green screens situated on massive soundstages, Black’s line readings were invaluable to the other actors.
High-tech camera
Also essential in assisting the actors, as well as creating a cohesive and relatable world, was a groundbreaking camera known as the DualMoCo (the “MoCo” is for motion control), which was used extensively for the first time on “Gulliver’s Travels.” The DualMoCo utilized complex computer technology and synchronized camera cranes to capture, in real time, the bigger-than-life Gulliver and the tiny Lilliputians in the same scene, despite the characters’ enormous height differential. While Black was in one area of the soundstage, performing against a green screen, the actors portraying the Lilliputians would be on another part of the stage, acting “opposite” Black. Adds producer Gregory Goodman: “On screen, you’ll see Jack speaking with a character who’s a tiny fraction of Gulliver’s size. The aim in using the DualMoCo was to make the effect look real and yet like nothing you’ve seen before.”
“Gulliver’s Travels” opens January 8 (Saturday) in theaters in 3D and 35mm formats in all theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
